The Artist: Samuel John Peploe

(1871-1935)
Samuel John Peploe (1871-1935) was born in Edinburgh. After leaving the Royal Scottish Academy, Peploe went to Paris with fellow artist Robert Brough where he studied at the Academie Julie and the Atelier Colarossi. Peploe was a leading member of a group of Glasgow artists who became known as the ‘Scottish Colourists'. The colourists were influenced by the work of contemporary French artists and by the Post-impressionists in particular, Cezanne, Van Gogh and Gauguin. His use and understanding of light and colour are to be seen in the many still life, land and seascape paintings left by him.
