Rice was a struggling actor in New York who overheard a black man singing this song; in 1828 Rice appeared on stage as 'Jim Crow' an exaggerated, highly stereotypical Black character; gave his name to the Jim Crow laws instituted after Reconstruction in 1877 that limited the rights of black citizens in America;
