About

Confederate President Jefferson Davis writes the order for Major General Benjamin Franklin Butler to be hanged while 16th President of the US, Abraham Lincoln (1809-65) drafts the Emancipation Proclamation; 7th June 1863 Butler had executed one William B. Mumford, who had torn down a United States flag placed by Admiral Farragut on the United States Mint in New Orleans; for this execution, Butler was denounced by Davis as a felon deserving capital punishment, who if captured should be reserved for execution;
