Englishmen to the Rescue. In 1572, Queen Elizabeth bids farewell to the first contingent of English volunteers, off from Greenwich to aid the Dutch fight for liberty against the Spanish. In a piece of characteristic daring (see inset) English volunteers smuggled themsleves into Spanish-held Breda, surprised the guards and opened the town gates to the Dutch forces. A long and costly siege had been avoided. Original artwork for illustration on pp16-17 of Look and Learn issue no 951 (12 April 1980).
