About

Jean Nau. One the most successful - and villainous - bucaneers was the Frenchman Jean Nau. In 1664 at the head of the band called the Brethren of the Coast, he landed on the South American mainland and marched on Maracalbo and Gibraltar. He sacked both cities, torturing the civilians to reveal their treasures. His haul was 260,000 gold coins. Original artwork for illustration on p28 of Look and Learn issue no 164 (6 March 1965). Lent for scanning by The Gallery of Illustration.
