Duel between Lord Castlereagh, the Secretary of State for War and the Colonies (1769-1822) and George Canning, Foreign Secretary (1770-1827), both members of the cabinet under Prime Miniser Lord Portland, 21st September 1809; Canning had never fired a pistol before and missed Castlereagh, while Castlereagh hit Canning in the thigh; both were subsequently forced to resign from the government;
