Thomas Telford (1757-1834); famous civil engineer; builder and designer of many canals, bridges, roads and harbours in Britain; contributed to drainage of English fens; President of Institution of Civil Engineers from 1820 to 1834; in background is Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, part of the Ellesmere Canal, constructed and designed by Telford with William Jessop (1745-1814);
