from 'Olympia 1936: Die Olympischen Spiele 1936 in Berlin und Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Band 2', pub. by Cigaretten-Bilderdienst; the Japanese competitors Shuhei Nishida (1910-1997) and Sueo Oe (1914-1941) tied for second place; Oe agreed to the bronze and Nishida the silver after they declined the offer of a jump-off; on their return to Japan they cut their medals in half and then fused them together creating the 'medals of friendship';
