engraved by Bartolozzi after the oil painting by Devis of Charles, 1st Marquess of Cornwallis (1738-1805): in 1781, surrendered to the American-French army at the siege of Yorktown during the American War of Independence; in 1786 appointed Governor General and Commander in Chief in India; in 1792 he defeated Tipu Sultan and returned to Britain in 1793; created Marquess in 1792; dedication to his daughter-in-law, Louisa, wife of his son, Charles, Viscount Brome;
