La Mort de Cleonice; Pausanias (d.470 BC): nephew of Spartan King Leonidas and general of Spartan army at battle of Plataea in 479 BC; forced young maiden, Cleonice, to sleep with him and when entering his bedroom by mistake she knocked over a lamp; he thought she was attacking him and killed her; for the rest of his life he was haunted by nightmares because of this tragic error;
