About
'Heavy with Arctic gear and stuck between rocks covered in salty sea-ice, I watched a group of Arctic foxes by Hudson Bay, Canada. They were patrolling the beach looking for food. One spotted me, emerging out of the mist, and came so close I could have stroked its fur.' Home for the Arctic fox are the icy plains towards the North Pole. To survive the bitter cold, it has the most insulating fur of any mammal. Its muzzle, ears and legs are also all short, to reduce heat loss. It survives on anything it can find - scraps from polar bear kills, invertebrates, even digging up ringed seal pups from their lairs.
