Viglius Zuichen ab Aytta (1507-77); Dutch humanist, jurist and statesman in the Spanish Netherlands during the reigns of Charles V and Philip II; President of the Council of State in 1559 during the Regency of Margaret of Parma; in 1562 Chancellor of the Order of the Golden Fleece; from 1562-77, Provost of the Cathedral of Saint Bavo in Ghent; tried to promote religious moderation and restrain the ferocity of the Duke of Alva;
