Charles d'Eon de Beaumont (1728-1810); French political adventurer; sent by Louis XV to Russia as a secret agent (1755); minister plenipotentiary in London (1762-63); Captain of Dragoons; celebrated swordsman; took part in fencing tournaments until seriously wounded in 1786; lived in London from 1785 and died there in poverty in 1810;
