Product details Lindisfarne Gospels
This incipit page is from the beginning of the Gospel of St Luke in the Lindisfarne Gospels. The text begins: 'Quoniam quidem multi conati sunt ordinare narrationem' (Foreasmuch as many have taken it in hand to set forth in order). Animal ornamentation frames the text, including birds, and at the bottom right of the page, a cat. The Lindisfarne Gospels is one of the most magnificent manuscripts created in the Middle Ages. It was written and decorated at the end of the 7th century by the monk Eadfrith, who became Bishop of Lindisfarne in 689 and died in 721.
