A sewn sambuk on the beach at Shihr

A sewn boat on the beach at Shihr. This ancient type was known locally as a sambuk (not to be confused with the larger, nail-built and transom-sterned sambuk). It was double-ended and stitched together with coir twine, no iron being used in its construction. It thus preserved an Indian Ocean method of boat-building of great antiquity, which was remarked upon by both ancient and mediaeval writers.
