Alexandria from Marabout
In 1883 Wyllie went to Alexandria to make studies for the two paintings of the July 1882 British Bombardment, which had been commissioned by the Fine Art Society, London. Wyllie's studies, with their vivid blues and greens, evoke the brilliant light of the eastern Mediterranean, and may also reflect the influence of 19th-century travel artists such as Edward Lear.
