Ascent of the Prophet Muhammad
This miniature shows the ascent of the Prophet Muhammed to heaven, on his horse, Buraq, guided by the archangel Gabriel, with an escort of angels. It is from Nizami's Khamsa (Five Poems) and was created in Tabriz in Iran in 1539-43 by the calligrapher Shah Mahmud Nishapuri (d. 1564-5), for Shah Tahmasp (r. 1524-76). According to tradition, the face of the Prophet Muhammed has been whitened out.
