Black Eagle Wharf, Wapping

Wapping, on the north bank of the Thames, just below Tower Bridge, was one of the busiest waterfronts in London. As Britain's empire expanded, sea trade into London became ever busier and so more wharves and warehouses were built along the river from the Pool of London to the area now known as Docklands. the area began to decline with the arrival of larger steam vessels which could not sail so far up the river and which has to unload their cargoes further downstream. The old warehouses of Wapping have now been transformed into luxury apartments and the river no longer bustles with traffic.
