Deal porters unloading a lighter

A liner can be seen on Greenwich Reach in the background and Deptford Power Station is evident to the left of the picture. Beyond the power station and some way in the distance, Borthwick's Cold Store (built in 1934) is visible. Borthwick Wharf had storage facilities for over 300,000 meat carcasses. The deal porters were men who carried timber planks that had been unloaded from a ship to special piles where the wood was stored. They wore protective padding on their heads and necks as they carried the planks of wood or 'deals'.
