Detail view of 'Great Eastern' prior to her 1858 launch
Great Eastern', an iron sailing steam ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was the largest ship ever built at the time of her 1858 launch. She had the capacity to carry 4,000 passengers around the world without refuelling. Her builder John Scott Russell is seen at the right of the picture.
