Product details Evening in the Black Country

Evening in the Black Country

Edwin Butler Bayliss

Following the Industrial Revolution, the Black Country became the industrial heart of Britain. It was known for its pollution, especially from the iron and coal industries that exploited the area's wealth of underground mineral deposits. Charles Dickens was one visitor unimpressed with the factory chimneys he encountered in the Midlands in 1841, describing how they `poured out their plague of smoke, obscured the light, and made foul the melancholy air.'

The Wolverhampton artist Edwin Butler Bayliss, on the other hand, was fascinated by the unique industrial landscape of the Black Country and set about recording it. Coming from a wealthy family, he was able to devote much time to his art.

This painting is one of a series capturing local industrial scenes at different times of the day and year. Typical of his work, this painting does not prettify the view, but accurately captures the melancholic atmosphere of the area.
