Two pensioners and a woman, probably one of the Hospital nurses, are seen beside Rysbrack's statue of George II. The Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich was founded in 1694 was King William III and Queen Mary II. Greenwich pensioners were men of all ages who were no longer fit to serve at sea as a result of age, wounds or disabilities. The Hospital eventually closed in 1869.
