The incipit page of St John's Gospel from the Grimbald Gospels. The text reads 'In prin[cipio erat] verbum et verbum erat apud D[eu]m et D[eu]s erat verbum' (In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God). Around the text are decorative medallions and an ornate border. At the top in the centre the Virgin and Child can be seen. The Grimbald Gospels was originally produced between 1012 and 1023 in England (in Canterbury or Winchester).
