Marlon Brando, American Academy Award-winning actor. Regarded by many as the greatest film actor of all, Marlon Brando (1924-2004) made his cinema debut in Fred Zinnemann's The Men in 1950. His fame and reputation grew in the early 1950s with his performances in A Streetcar Named Desire, Julius Caesar, The Wild One and especially On the Waterfront, for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor in 1954. Brando's acting style influenced a range of stars, from James Dean and Paul Newman to Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. His later career is widely held to have failed to reach the heights of his early films, but he still produced occasional iconic performances such as his roles in Mutiny on the Bounty, The Godfather and Apocalypse Now.
