Portrait of a Dutch frigate
A Dutch frigate viewed from slightly abaft the port beam. Courses and spritsail are clewed and the topsails are stowed. On the tafferel is a lion rapant on a crowned shield with a figure above.
The drawing is rubbed on the back but it appears to be the original of and not the offset from PAH9340. The correction in the luff with wash and later with hesitant pen and brown ink was made probably only a few years later, or it may be by the Elder.
This is one of three early drawings (see PAH9340 and PAF6451) by the Younger in light pencil and wash. The sheers of the ships and the narrowness of the sterns are features of early ships. It is approximately dated by the subject and style.
