Portrait of the 'Jupiter'
Portrait of the 'Jupiter', 45 guns. She was built in 1653, and became obsolete in 1686. She is viewed from the port quarter. On the port tafferel, Jupiter sits astride an eagle. On the rail above, crossed anchors on a shield between sea-gods riding on dolphins. Two shields on the counter, port side covered and starboard side three fish, for Enkhuizen and the Admiralty of the North Quarter. One of three drawings (see PAH9350 and PAH9351), probably best on offsets, but not in reverse, worked up in rapid but accurate pencil and light flat wash. It is approximately dated based on subjects and watermarks.
