Ruins of a Roman Capitol, 1859

Davis Roberts

Many artists sought inspiration from the classical architecture of Ancient Greece and Rome. This painting is one of seven made by David Roberts during a winter visit to Rome. It shows the three columns of the temple Vespasian and on the left the churches of St.Luca and St.Martina (domed). On the bottom right is the arch of Septimus Severus, behind which are the columns of the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, with the Colosseum in the distance.
