St Luke in the Lindisfarne Gospels
St Luke is depicted in the Lindisfarne Gospels at the beginning of his Gospel. He is accompanied by his traditional symbol, a calf or a young ox. The Lindisfarne Gospels is one of the most stunning manuscripts created in the Middle Ages. It was written and decorated at the end of the 7th century by the monk Eadfrith, who became Bishop of Lindisfarne in 689 and died in 721.
