Surrender of U-111 to the trawler 'Lady Shirley'

Charles Pears

This oil painting depicts the surrender of the German submarine U-111 to the anti-submarine trawler 'Lady Shirley' in position 27.15N, 20.27W south west of Tenerife, on 4 October 1941. She had been brought to the surface by repeated depth-charging and eight of the 52 strong crew had been killed. U-111 had been laid down in February 1940 at Bremen and had previously carried out two patrols during the Bate of the Atlantic, sinking four Allied merchant ships with a combined tonnage of 24,176 tons.
