The capture of the 'Guillaume Tell', 31 March 1800

The second of a pair of drawings, of which the first (PAF5878) shows the start of this action. This shows the end, with the completely dismasted and surrended 'Guillaume Tell' in the centre, under the guns of Berry's 'Foudroyant' to the right, and the 'Lion' far right. The frigate 'Penelope' is in the distance on the left. The 'Guillaume Tell' was one of only two major French ships that escaped destruction or capture at the Battle of the Nile, taking eventual refuge in French-held Malta. She was captured when she attempted to escape eighteen months later. Pocock's preliminary pencil sketch for this drawing is PAD8765. Signed and dated by the artist, lower right. Purchased from Mrs K. E. Maunsell, 1953 and formerly in the Berry Collection.
