The Dutch fleet off Flushing, 25 August/4 September 1666
The title is written in Dutch on the reverse of the image. Portfolio. The Dutch Fleet off Flushing, 25 August [OS]/ 4 September 1666. A panoramic distant view of a number of ships at anchor in the estuary of the Scheldt off Flushing in what is now the south west Netherlands. In the centre an admiral's ship is saluting with yachts near her. The commander-in-chief, Michiel de Ruyter in the 'Zeven Provincien' is in the right distance, and in the foreground there is a galjoot before the wind. It is delicately drawn like three other views of shipping off Flushing in the collection, but it has been suggested that some of the washes as well as the galjoot, may be by a later hand, but this perhaps seems unlikely.
