The Secret

This print relates to a story possibly even of the same name. The print shows two young women in flowing 16th century gowns, heads together, presumably sharing the secret of the title. The woman to the left of the print sits, her hands folded on her lap, her head turned toward the other woman. The second woman stands next to her, leaning over slightly her hand on the sitting woman's hand holding a flower. This print was published by the firm Smith, Elder & Co as were quite a number in the Herschel collection. The brother of Margaret Brodie Herschel (nee Stewart), Peter Stewart worked for Smith, Elder & Co as a printer.
