The 'Vanguard' disabled and in tow by the 'Alexander', 22 May 1798

This is either a rough study by Nicholas Pocock for PAF5876 or a copy from it. The style suggests that the latter is more likely and that the artist is probably Pocock's son and pupil, William Innes Pocock (1783 -1836). He joined the Navy from 1795 and became a lieutenant in 1811, but was also a good marine artist who both exhibited and had some work published.
