Tromp in the 'Oosterwijk' saluting?
Tromp in the 'Oosterwijk' saluting. In the centre distance is a bow view of the 'Oosterwijk' at anchor; apparently with the flag at the fore and pendant at the main. Astern of her is a ship with a flag and pendant at the main. On the left is a starboard view of a private ship.
This is a drawing executed with a flat wash over it, added to the ship's sides and across the foreground. The drawing is by van de Velde but some of the wash may be by an eighteenth-century copyist. This copyist may also be responsible for the English translation of the original inscription: Adml. van Tromp in the Oosterwijk a 64, gun ship. Striking his Flag.
Willem van de Velde, the Elder
