Two cutters under sail and a ship at anchor

The Joy brothers moved to Portsmouth in about 1832. Here, they worked as government draughtsmen, later moving to Chichester and London. Their precise and detailed watercolours, in which they frequently collaborated, reflect their thorough knowledge of shipping and seamanship. Their watercolours are colourful and atmospheric, and depend largely on the use of pinks, purples and greens. The watercolour is signed.
