'The explanatory print' [to 'A balloon prospect...']

William Angus

Map of the flight of Thomas Baldwin's balloon from Chester to Rixton Moss in Lancashire. A looping line represents the flight path of the balloon. Major topographical features are noted, such as the River Mersey, with towns and villages including Chester, Helsby, and Warrington. The author explained that this print was intended to be viewed alongside plate 3 in his book ['A balloon prospect from above the clouds'] since it 'elucidates the former by giving the names of the principal places mentioned in the excursion.' Plate 4 from Airopaidia: containing the narrative of a balloon excusion from Chester...by Thomas Baldwin (J.Fletcher, Chester, 1786). Inscribed above: 'To be placed on Page 155 of Airopaidia'. Inscribed below: 'The EXPLANATORY Print. See Page IIIId.' Thomas Baldwin made a pioneering flight from Chester on 8 September 1785 sketching the landscape as he travelled. The balloon belonged to the Italian aeronaut Vincenzo Lunardi (1759-1806).

Original: engraving. 1786
