Start of the Le Mans 24 Hours, France, 1959

Unknown

Start of the Le Mans 24 Hours, France, 1959. Roy Salvadori prepares to climb aboard his Aston Martin DBR1 (no 5), while Stirling Moss leaps into his (no 4). A line of Gendarmes keep the crowd at a safe distance from the cars. This type of start where drivers had to run across the track and jump into their cars was discontinued for safety reasons in 1970. Salvadori's car won the race, whilst Moss had to retire due to engine trouble.
