Product details A Decided Preference

A Decided Preference

Joseph Swain

'A Decided Preference', 1877. France is shown wearing the outfit of the Republic and deciding that she looks her best in it. This relates to the elections to the French Chamber of Deputies that took place in mid-October 1877. The elections resulted in a triumph for the Republicans who won 316 seats. The result showed that France was still in favour of the Republic and was thus a perceived setback for the President, M'Mahon. From Punch, or the London Charivari, October 27, 1877.
