Product details Faust and Mephistopheles

Faust and Mephistopheles

Anonymous

'Faust and Mephistopheles', 1888. Faust is the House of Lords and Mr Henry Labouchere MP is Mephistopheles. Labouchere was the latest in a long line of MPs to introduce a proposal to reform the House of Lords. Attempts had been made at the beginning of the 1880s but had come to nothing. The House of Lords, like Faust, wanted to remain the same for ever. From Punch, or the London Charivari, March 24, 1888.
