Product details Over The Way

Over The Way

John Tenniel

'Over The Way', 1866. The representative of the Protestant Church tells the Catholic priests, all wearing very superior and sanctimonious expressions, that he doesn't want any of their rituals in his church. The priests are shown with incense and the tools of their rituals, such as their chasubles. They are told to take them to the Pope, as usual described as the old lady. The cross keys symbol in the background denotes the Papacy but, in this cartoon, looks more like the sign of a public-house. Punch was a consistent opponent of any infiltration of Catholic priests or Catholic ritual into Britain. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 17, 1866.
