Product details The British Slave
The British Slave
'The British Slave', 1861. The worker, a bricklayer, has been on strike, but, looking at his distressed wife and children, has realised his family needs him to return to work. There is no fire in the grate, nor food on the table. His working tools lie idle on the floor under a notice of the bricklayers' demands. A union official, stout, florid and well-dressed, finds it easy to instruct the bricklayer to remain on strike, and not to give in, Want to go to work, do yer? Goin' to give in, are yer? Not if I know it From Punch, or the London Charivari, April 20, 1861.
