A balloon prospect from above the clouds
Cloudscape and view of the Earth with a line representing the flight path of the balloon from which the scene was taken. The illustration was captioned by the author: "A Balloon-prospect from above the clouds or a chromatic view of the country between Chester , Warrington and Rixton-Moss in Lancashire: shewing the whole extent of the aerial voyage; with the meandering track of the balloon thro' the air Plate 3 from Airopaidia: containing the narrative of a balloon excusion from Chester...by Thomas Baldwin (J.Fletcher, Chester, 1786). Inscribed above: "To face page 154 of Airopaidia". Inscribed below: "T.Baldwin Arm. delt. et pinx. Angus sculp. A BALLOON PROSPECT from ABOVE the CLOUDE see page IIIc. Publish'd May 1st 1786, by T.Baldwin Chester." Thomas Baldwin made a pioneering flight from Chester on 8 September 1785 sketching the landscape as he travelled. The balloon belonged to the Italian aeronaut Vincenzo Lunardi (1759-1806).
