Fossil ammonite section with two details of calcium carbonate crystals, here termed 'crystallized carbonate of lime, lenticular equiaxed'. Plate 12 from British mineralogy: or coloured figures intended to elucidate the mineralogy of Great Britain, by James Sowerby, volume 1 (London, R.Taylor & Co., 1804). The accompanying text states that the fossil 'is the Helmintholithus Ammonites of Linn. Gmel....abundant in many parts of Great Britain.' The crystals appear 'In the chambers of this Nautilus'. The plate is inscribed: 'Jany 1 1803. Published by Jas. Sowerby, London.'
