Product details Cloud horizon

Cloud horizon

Charles Piazzi Smyth

Landscape view of the horizon as seen from the peak of Mount Teide, Tenerife. Some green foliage is visible in the foreground, and behind it the rock face of another section of the cliff. The clouds are depicted as far below the sitter's viewpoint, and the sky is tinged with pink.

Inscribed in ink underneath: 'The cloud horizon of the Alta Vista Station looking South, showing part of the Southern wall of the Great Crater; the highest point of which was the site of the Guajara station.'

The 'Alta Vista Station' was the name of the camp erected at the peak of Mount Teide by Charles Piazzi Smyth and his party during their 1856 astronomical expedition to this volcanic mountain range. The 'Guajara Station' refers to their camp on Mount Guajara.

From the 'Tenerife Papers of Charles Piazzi Smyth', a scrapbook of watercolours and stereographs documenting this expedition.
