Anne of Denmark

Anonymous

Anne of Denmark, early 17th century, (1910). Portrait of Anne (1574-1619), the queen of James I. Her clothing is similar to the costume at the end of Elizabeth I's reign. Clearly shown is the absolutely flat projection of the farthingale with its table-like edge, and series of radiating pleats on the surface. The farthingale stuck out more at the sides than at the front or back. Also illustrated is the intricate design of the needlework. She carries a long feathered fan and a book. Illustration from British Costume during 19 Centuries by Mrs Charles H Ashdown, (London, 1910).
