Lock & Whitfield

Earl of Carnarvon, President of the Society of Antiquaries, 1880. His maiden speech in the House of Lords brought him to the attention of Lord Derby. Derby appointed him Under-Secretary of State for the colonies in 1858 during his second administration, and Secretary of State for the colonies during his third administration. In 1874 he served in Disraeli's government in the same post. In 1884 he became lord lieutenant of Ireland. Away from political life he was interested in archæology. He became fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1877, and was president from 1878 to 1885. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
