Hooge Crater Cemetery, near Ypres, Belgium, World War I
Hooge Crater Cemetery, near Ypres, Belgium, World War I, c1917-c1918. Hooge is a village that was located within the Ypres salient during the First World War. A large crater was formed when the British Army detonated a huge mine in 1915. Craters were strategically important in the flat countryside and the one at Hooge was bitterly fought over, changing hands several times. The graves of 5924 British and Commonwealth soldiers are in the cemetery, which was begun in 1917. Stereoscopic card detail.
