Henry V

Portion of a letter from Henry V, c1419. Part of a letter giving directions for the defence of the northern borders and for the safe keeping of the Duke of Orleans and other French prisoners taken at Agincourt in 1415, and of James I of Scotland, captured at sea on his way to France in 1406, information having been recieved of a design concerted between the Duke of Orleans and the Duke of Albany, Regent of Scotland. There is no signature or address remaining. Henry's brother mentioned in the first line was John, Duke of Bedford, Guardian of the Kingdom during the King's absence in France. A letter of similar purport as regards the Duke of Orleans was written by Henry to the Bishop of Durham, Chancellor, from Grisors, 1st October 1419. From the second series of Facsimiles of royal, historical, literary and other autographs in the Department of Manuscripts, British Museum: Series I-V. (London, 1899).
