Product details Tower of the Forty Martyrs, Ramla, Palestine
Tower of the Forty Martyrs, Ramla, Palestine
Tower of the Forty Martyrs, Ramla, Palestine, c1930s. This was the minaret of the White Mosque, built in the 13th century. 15th century Muslim tradition had it that forty of the Prophet Mohammed's companions were buried in the mosque. Because of this, it came to be wrongly believed in the West that the tower had been part of a church devoted to the Forty Martyrs of Sebastia, Nablus. A print from Countries of the World, edited by JA Hammerton, volume V, The Fleetway House, London, c1930s.
