Berlin a city divided. Childrens party at the sector boundary Berlin 15th August 1953. This picture was taken from the eastern part of Friedrich strasse. It shows children playing in the vicinity of the sector boundary sign. Only a few months earlier in June during the workers revolt in East Germany, American and Soviet tanks stood opposite each other in the Friedrich Strasse, creating a credible threat of force at the Allies sector line, Checkpoint Charlie. From that time on, the border crossing at Checkpoint Charlie symbolised the collision of two world systems of Democracy and Communism. Following the completion of the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie became one of the enduring symbols of the Cold War.
